Catherine is the second daughter of Sir John Hawkwood and his wife Donnina Visconti, an illegitimate daughter of the Duke of Milan. She was born in 1379 and grew up in her farther's house in San Donato near Florence. In 1392, when Catherine was only 13, her farther promised her in marriage to Conrad Prospergh, a German knight and captain. On 21 January 1393, they were married at San Donato in the presence of high-ranking officials which demonstrated the high esteem in which Sir John was held by the city.
After her husband's death in 1422, Catherine went to live with her mother at Terranova near Lodi. In 1464, Catherine was still alive and living in Terranova which she inherited from her mother.
